Tin God {Author Guest Post}

“One day, you’re going to have a kid just like you, and I can’t wait.”

That’s what my mother used to say when I was smarting off to her or throwing a fit in the bathroom because my hair wouldn’t curl the way I wanted it to. I was an emotional, edgy, smart mouthed kid. And guess what? My seven-year-old daughter is just like me.

Almost. She’s not shy like I was. Never met a stranger. But she’s got a come back for everything, and it’s really hard to get the best of her. When she’s irritated, she grits her teeth and talks through them just like me. I catch her saying some of the things I mutter when I’m annoyed. Monkey see, monkey do. Apparently my mother was right about more than one thing. I know, imagine that.

But I can handle the sass and the temper. It’s the emotional end I’m worried about. She feels everything very deeply, and takes the smallest disappointment to heart. I get it, believe me, and right now, I can usually pull her out of it. It’s the puberty thing I’m worried about. What is this kid going to be like when she’s 13? I was very self-conscious, wore my feelings on my sleeve, and butted heads with my parents whenever I could (although I wasn’t a real troublemaker. I never had the guts to sneak out and go partying).

Grace already worries about her looks and her clothes. What about when she’s gangly and awkward with a crop of zits? Is she going to cry in front of the mirror and want to smash it with the hair dryer? Not that I ever did…

She’s going to be an emotional handful, and I’m terrified I won’t be able to help her. How do you guide a girl through that? Is there a handbook I could study before the time comes?

Maybe preparation is the key. Or perhaps full body armor and a bottomless glass of wine.

How do you handle your tween and teen girls?

Tin God

Getting pregnant as a teenager and being coerced into giving her baby up for adoption left a festering scar on Jaymee Ballard’s life. Trapped by poverty and without many allies, Jaymee nearly gives up hope of getting her daughter back after her best friend is murdered. Now, four years later, a wealthy woman with legal connections hires her as a housekeeper, and Jaymee gathers the courage to seek her help. But Jaymee’s last chance ends up in a puddle of blood in one of the historic antebellum mansions in Roselea, Mississippi.

I just murdered your wife…again.

An unsigned letter consisting of six horrifying words turns Nick Samuels stagnant life upside down. Stuck in emotional purgatory since his wife’s unsolved murder four years ago, Nick is about to self-destruct. The arrival of the letter claiming credit for his wife’s murder and boasting of a new kill sends Nick to Roselea, where he and Jaymee’s worlds collide.

Jaymee and Nick realize exposing the truth about her daughter’s adoption is the only way to solve the murders. Up against years of deception, they rush to identify the killer before the evidence–and Jaymee’s daughter–are lost.

But the truth doesn’t always set the guilt-ridden free. Sometimes, it destroys them.

Dog-ma the Zen of Slobber Book Tour

Tips for up and coming authors

by author of Dog-Ma, the zen of slobber, Barbara Boswell Brunner

The phrase “you don’t know what you don’t know” has so much meaning for a
newbie author. You sit down at the computer; spend a few months
developing an outline that evolves into a book you think people will
really enjoy. You work diligently on a query letter, cleverly formatted
to grab the attention of one of the select publishers on your list -
publishers you have done extensive research on, discovering the ones
most likely to enjoy your genre. And you wait. And you wait.

You
know your book is special and all you need is ONE publisher or agent
who sees it the same way. You think, “Oh my, what if I get several
publishers or agents that want my book? How will I choose?”

Your happy bubble gets burst when you receive your first rejection letter. Oh, it is worded so politely. But it stings…A LOT!

Dear So-And-So,
We
truly thank you for submitting your book, (insert your title here).
While it is a lovely and well-written piece it is not something that
fits into our current needs.
We wish you the best in finding a publisher/agent (you choose) who is a better fit.

All our best,
(insert name of rejecter)

Ouch!
And it could be followed by many more. One best-selling author friend
of mine, who is now represented by a big firm in New York got over 300
rejection letters before he found the right agent. It’s all a matter of
fit, luck and timing.

Don’t give up. Persevere. Be tenacious. I call it my Terrier perspective. I
have one of these creatures. Her name is Izzy. She is blind, deaf in one
ear and has the personality of the Tasmanian Devil. Despite her
shortcomings, she does not give up. If she wants to chase her ball, she
will. Throw it for her and her nose takes over. With a little guidance
of “yes” and “no” as she gets nearer or farther from the goal she will
eventually find it, and with great pleasure carry it back to you, drop
it and be ready for another hunt.

Perhaps
Izzy’s tenacity will also inspire you to keep sending those query
letters. When you eventually find the right fit and get signed with a
publisher, just don’t growl at them!

My thoughts on Food for a Hungry Ghost.

It was a very fast read and that doesn’t diminish the quality of this book in the very least.  The author does keep you guessing right up to the very end.  And like most ghost stories I often caught my self looking over my shoulder cause I tend to do all my reading at night in the dark with my kindle.  That alone is spooky in itself.  I feel that the author made this a book that could be enjoyed by anyone age 12 and up.

Not that it was only for the kids because I am a kid at heart and enjoyed it.  I think the author did a fabulous job with relating her writing to her target audience without forgetting out the other type of readers.  I highly recommend this if you are needing a good short story to bring you some enjoyment.

T.S. Graham was born and raised in midcoast Maine. He has worked as a sea urchin diver, fish monger, home renovator, and in several group homes for children and adults with disabilities. His original screenplay, Stone’s Point, written as Clint Elliott, has won multiple awards. He studied English Literature at the University of Southern Maine, where, despite developing a strong dislike of the traditional curriculum focused on old, dead (and boring) scribes, he somehow managed to graduate with honors. His greatest influences are writers like Stephen King and Michael Crichton, whose talents would have allowed them to write more literary fare, but they chose to thrill and entertain instead. He now lives on a horse farm with his beautiful wife and five daughters, two poodles, two cats, two happy turtles, four playful ferrets, three fish, a corn snake named “Tiger,” dozens of chickens, and, of course, four awesome equines. My thoughts on Swept into Darkness.   What would you do if you found out that you were half Angel and half human?   That would be enough to completely throw you over the edge especially since it was your very own mother who kept this secret from you.  Then to find out that others are now after you to join the dark angels.  I loved the dabble with mythology.   I have always been in love with reading about the Greek gods.  This is a great blend if both without compromising the storyline.  This is a very fast paced story that captures you right at the Blurb.  The traveling to other realms has you jumping into the story with the main character Sydney.   If you like the paranormal book this has a great blend for you.  I was given a copy in exchange for a honest and unbiased review and all opinions that are expressed are my own.

My thoughts on Nobody Has to Know.  This is a action filled and suspence book.  You are wanting to read more and more.  This type of story that happens in the beginning actually happens more and more now that the teachers are becoming younger in the job market.  Yes there is rules about dating minor students but this day and age the kids are looking a lot older than what they are.  Some people might not like some of the scenes in the book but this was not meant to be a rendition of a children’s book.   As with any forbidden secret once your secret becomes known to someone you open yourself up to all kinds of controversy.  You also leave yourself opened to blackmail.  Being blackmailed can make you do many things in order to protect yourself.  I highly recommend this for other readers.  I received a copy in exchange for a honest and unbiased review and the opinions expressed are my own.

My review of Untangling The Knot.  It made me think about the movie The Wedding Planner with Jennifer Lopez. I really liked this story.  What happens when you become someone who is supposed to be all about love but never really had that right moment?   Then Bam it hits you like a ton of bricks but the bad thing is he is the groom to be.  The author told a very well written story that entertained me as a reader.
