Over the last year of writing my Forbes blog, I have had the opportunity to really dig deeply into the world of crowdfunding. I’ve just completed my first draft of my new book, Crowdfunding for Social Good: Financing Your Mark on the World.
The book is a guide to successful crowdfunding for people who want to change the world.
The book is not a sequel to my book, Your Mark On The World, but it is written in the same spirit. I’ve studied a dozens of successful crowdfunding campaigns, interviewing the people behind them to learn their secrets for success.
Devin’s Book, Your Mark on the World, was downloaded over 75,000 times and reached the #19 spot on Amazon’s free book list–among all free books. It remains on the top 50 free nonfiction books at Amazon.

Review – I’m ashamed to say I don’t really think about charity, sure I give at church, I throw coins at the bell ringers at Christmas, and I donate used clothing but nothing up and above that. I never heard of Crowdfunding or thought that I could do anything to make a change.
Reading the examples of what people were doing gave me hope for humanity and made me reexamine myself. I’m a good person but I can certainly do more to help those around me. There were stories about people who had lost loved ones and made lemonade out of lemons. This is a truly inspirational book. I highly recommend!
Devin D. Thorpe thinks he is the luckiest person alive. After being “let go” from the best job he’d ever had—as the Chief Financial Officer of the multinational food and beverage company MonaVie—he and his wife ended up living in China for a year where he wrote Your Mark On The World and embarked on the career he’d always wanted yet hadn’t dared dream.
Now, as an author, a popular guest speaker and Forbes contributor, Devin is devoted full time to championing social good. His current life isn’t much like his past.
As an entrepreneur, Devin ran—at separate times—a boutique investment banking firm and a small mortgage company. He served as the Treasurer for the multinational vitamin manufacturer USANA Health Sciences years before becoming CFO for MonaVie. Over his career he led or advised on the successful completion of $500 million in transactions.
Devin squeezed in two brief stints in government, including two years working for Jake Garn on the U.S. Senate Banking Committee Staff and another year working for an independent state agency called USTAR, where he helped foster technology entrepreneurship during Governor Jon Huntsman’s administration.
Devin is proud to have graduated from the University of Utah David Eccles School of Business, which recognized him as a Distinguished Alum in 2006. He also earned an MBA at Cornell University where he ran the student newspaper, Cornell Business.
Today, Devin channels the idealism of his youth with the loving support of his wife, Gail. Their son Dayton is a PhD candidate in Physics at UC Berkeley (and Devin rarely misses an opportunity to mention that).

Legend of the Spider-Prince: REBEL
Wyl is a young rebel whose life of dangerous lies and hidden truths has cost him his childhood and his ability to trust. He is fanatically loyal to the rebel leader, a woman embroiled in a blood-feud with Trascolm’s ruling clan. When he’s not away spying, he’s her secret bodyguard—she needs protection from her army of renegades and outlaws as much as from bounty-hunters and assassins sent by her archenemy. But when the rebellion meets with disaster, the rebel leader’s strategy changes. Wyl is thrust into a hostile royal court of underage teens—mere children, to his mind. He’s expected to embrace this more civilized way of life, but his brutally-honed instincts betray him, and he makes enemies instead of friends. Wyl—a boy raised by outlaws—is in over his head and must somehow master the subtleties of court intrigue well enough to keep the rebel leader and her rebellion alive, despite the treacherous machinations of her enemies, and do it without getting himself killed.
About the Legend of the Spider-Prince series In a war-torn land where men have unbridled influence, but women hold the reins of power, a young rebel becomes entangled in a deadly web of magic, court intrigue, and revenge amid an escalating wave of events that will ultimately destroy magic, overturn governments, cause the near-collapse of civilization, even threaten the very existence of life on Eryth—and make him a legend.
SUE BROOKS REVIEW:
This is a new author for me to read – but I enjoyed the story and thoughtitwas fantastic!! This is not a fast read but it did keep my interest throughout the whole story!!!
The story is about a boy who has been trained to defend himself by one of the best war generals of all time, but he has yet to develop the strength of a man. He is one of the bodyguards to Helgurdda, the rebel leader who intends to be the royenne (queen) of their country.I won’t say much more about the story -because you should read it and discover the story for yourself.
I seriously had trouble putting this book down once I got into it because I wanted to know was going to happen next. It’s fabulous.
I was given a copy of this book for an honest review.
About the Author
I loved fairy tales as a child, but could never get enough of them until I learned to read for myself. I spent my formative years with my nose in a book or playing dungeon master for my sisters long before there were actual games requiring one. Our Barbies fought Klingons, conquered the galaxy—and always had room on their spaceship for horses.
I am a horsewoman, an archer, a fencer, a former military officer, and a member of the Society for Creative Anachronism—all useful skills and experiences for a fantasy novelist. I am currently holding down a day job in Mississippi, USA, where I live with my husband and two daughters, and am presently down to one horse, one cat, and one dog—and ‘way too many books.

Books written in blood. Most are lost, their Keepers with them. A curse that befell a people. A Kingdom with no King. Life couldn’t get more harrowing for the Elfies, a blend of Elves and Fairies. Or for sixteen-year-old Jules Blaze. Or could it?
For Jules, the heir of a Keeper, no less, suspects his family hides a forgotten secret. It was bad enough that his people, the Elfies of Reign, triggered a curse which reduced the entire inhabitants to a mere inch centuries ago. All because of one Keeper who failed his purpose. Even the King’s Ancient Books, did not help ward off that anathema.
Now, Gehzurolle, the evil lord, and his armies of Scorpents, seem bent on destroying Jules and his family. Why? Gehzurolle’s agents hunt for Jules as he journeys into enemy land to find the truth. Truth that could save him and his family, and possibly even reverse the age-long curse. Provided Jules doesn’t get himself killed first.
I received a copy of Keeper of Reign in exchange for a honest and unbiased review. I love how the author was able to capture the reader from page one. The descriptions of the characters and surroundings were exquisitely done. The story was fast paced with never a dull moment . It involves a curse on the people and land. Jules is in search of a way to reverse the curse before the big bad gets him. It was a really fun book and genuinely look forward to reading more from this fabulous author in the future. The only downside that I came across in reading this spectacular book is it ended. I was so drawn into the story I wanted and needed more. Well done on this great book! I absolutely loved the beautiful and brilliant cover.

Four long-estranged friends from London’s turbulent Sixties scene of sex, drugs and rock and roll are thrown together after seventeen years when one of them accidentally discovers the secret identity of their betrayer; a man they knew only as The Acid King, a charismatic figure who orchestrated a weekend of alluring drugs ending with a bust, jail time and death.
- What the friends don’t know is that a New York FBI Agent, another old enemy of the Acid King, has been on a long frustrating manhunt of his own, driven by the same rage for revenge. Until, by coincidence, he discovers the mystery man’s hidden Los Angeles location and tracks him to his lair. Resulting in a dangerous confrontation that puts lives, both guilty and innocent, on the line.
- The Acid King is the thinly veiled story of the famous Redlands drug bust of 1967; an event that put Mick Jagger and Keith Richards behind bars and nearly destroyed the world’s most famous rock band. All orchestrated by an unidentified man who set them up and then disappeared.
- By a strange twist of fate the Author (former film agent for Mick Jagger) met the Acid King in Los Angeles and became involved with him for several years, never knowing who he really was, until her friend Marianne Faithfull (former lover of Jagger) surprisingly identified him.

I was looking forward to reading this book after seeing the cool cover. The premise is a fictional account of people who had been friends in the sixties and are reunited in 1984. It is based on a true story about a drug bust that involved the Rolling Stones in the 60’s. The author created a band and a story where the results of the drug bust breaks up the band and has lasting effects on their lives.
It begins in 1984 when a two of the women in this group reunite in LA and one discovers that the other is acquainted with a man who she recognizes as the man who betrayed them 17 years before. This sets up a chain of events spanning from LA to England and even involving the FBI.
The style of writing took a little bit for me to get used to; I sometimes felt I was watching a TV show with the chapter breaks being where a commercial break would be inserted. I enjoyed the dialogue between the characters, it was witty and stylishly written. The author used flashbacks to the events in the 60’s where we gain insight into how they came to be where they are now. I liked that they all had different paths after the drug bust; a successful rock star, a bitter has-been set on revenge, and women who remade themselves and became successful. And the Acid King, who although he was in hiding, maintained his lifestyle
I have to say my favorite character was the Acid King himself. Even though he was the bad guy, he was a mysterious and intriguing character. I was amazed at how he was able to be one step ahead of everyone.
The ending was great and was where I found the most action in the storyline. It was like something out of a movie. I can’t say too much here since that would spoil it for those who have not read it, but I was surprised with how it all played out.
This would be a good book for anyone interested in the time when the Rolling Stones were coming into popularity and who enjoy a good story about the rock star culture.
Maggie Abbott started writing novels when she moved to Palm Springs after a long, successful show business career in Los Angeles, London, Rome, and New York.
A casual job as a secretary at the William Morris Agency in Rome introduced her to the exciting scene of Cleopatra, Fellini’s 8½ and The Pink Panther, with the city’s influx of big stars calling by the office every day, and triggered her lifelong love affair with movies.
Over the years, Maggie has enjoyed being in the most interesting places at the best of their times, while working as the movie agent for some exciting stars: Mick Jagger, David Bowie, Charlotte Rampling, Jacqueline Bisset, Martin Sheen, Raquel Welch, Christopher Plummer, Robert Redford, Mia Farrow, Peter Sellers, Richard Chamberlain, Peter O’Toole, Britt Ekland, Ken Russell, John Boorman, and many more.
Somewhere in between, Maggie was the production assistant on three Broadway plays, and a producer and studio executive at Columbia Pictures where she developed and got production credits on two movies.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for a honest and unbiased review. This was the first book that I have read from this author. I was a little hesitant because I’m really not a sci-fi kinda girl. But I was pleasantly surprised. I really enjoyed it.
This had sci-fi, fantasy, romance, and adventure. The characters had a lot of depth that helped bring them to life. It was fun seeing the humans having superpowers, but that didn’t make the story corny or any less enjoyable.
The author was able to create a world that actually helped give a greater picture to the reader. The storyline never experienced any flat points. I had a hard time putting the book down once I started. I would consider this more NA due to some sexual content in it. I’m really looking forward to more into the story with the next book.
